A former Arizona Cardinals running back finds himself in trouble with the law. Leshon Johnson, who played for the Cardinals from 1995-1997, is facing federal charges for allegedly running two big dog-fighting rings.
Arrested in Oklahoma, Johnson is alleged to have been running dog-fighting rings that included 190 pit bulls. The dogs were seized from Johnson last year.
From a press release about the arrest:
This isn't the first time he has been connected to dog fighting. He pleaded guilty to dog fighting charges in 2005, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
If convicted, Johnson faces a maximum penalty on each count of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Johnson had 955 rushing yards in his career from 1994-1999. His best season was in 1996 with the Cardinals, rushing for 634 yards and three touchdowns. His 214 rushing yards in a game in 1996 against the New Orleans Saints set the team record for rushing yards in a game that stood until Beanie Wells' 228 yards in a game in 2011. When Johnson did it, it was only the second-ever 200-yard rushing game in team history.

From a press release about the arrest:
He is charged with possessing 190 pit bull-type dogs for use in an animal fighting venture and for selling, transporting, and delivering a dog for use in an animal fighting venture. Federal authorities seized the 190 dogs from Johnson in October 2024 as authorized under the Animal Welfare Act. This is believed to be the largest number of dogs ever seized from a single person in a federal dog fighting case.
