Mar. 27—Former Rochester John Marshall girls basketball star Lilly Meister recently completed her junior season with the Indiana University women's team.
It turns out that the 2024-25 season will be the star forward's last with the Hoosiers.
According to multiple reports, the 6-foot-3 Meister entered the NCAA transfer portal this week, two days after Indiana's season ended with a hard-fought 64-53 loss to No. 2-ranked South Carolina — on the Gamecocks' home court — in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers finished the season with a 20-13 record.
Meister is the third Indiana player to enter the portal this week, along with junior guard Lexus Bargesser and sophomore guard Juliana LaMendola.
The men's and women's basketball transfer portals opened on Monday and will close on April 22.
Meister, a 2022 John Marshall graduate, opened this season as a starter for the Hoosiers, but she was replaced as the starting center midway through the season by senior Karoline Striplin. According to a report in the Indianapolis Star, Meister's playing time decreased from more than 21 minutes per game to fewer than 13. She finished the season averaging 6.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
Meister stood out, though, in the Hoosiers 76-68 win against Utah in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last week. She played 15 minutes and scored 11 points on perfect 5-for-5 shooting.
"I think we're all so happy for the way Lilly showed up today. And she was spot on," Hoosiers coach Teri Moren told IndyStar.com after the win against Utah. "When Lilly is confident, Lilly is a really good basketball player, and I think throughout the season she kind of lost that throughout."
As a sophomore last season, Meister played in all 32 of Indiana's games. She averaged 3.7 points and 2.7 rebounds, while playing 10.5 minutes per game, as the Hoosiers went 26-6 overall and 15-3 in the Big Ten Conference.
She averaged 6.5 minutes per game as a freshman in 2022-23, scoring 2.4 points per game and grabbing 2.1 rebounds.
Meister was a two-time All-State player at John Marshall. She was the Post Bulletin All-Area Player of the Year as a senior in the 2021-22 season, when she averaged 22.3 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. She also shot better than 53% from the field that season, as the Rockets went 21-8 and reached the Section 1, Class 4A championship game.
She finished her six-year varsity career with 2,293 points and a school-record 1,313 rebounds.
