A former Memphis basketball player and coach is going to the NCAA tournament.
Tony Madlock, who played at Memphis from 1988 to 1992 and later served as an assistant for Penny Hardaway (his teammate at Memphis), has been the head coach at Alabama State since 2022 and is headed to the tournament after the Hornets beat Jackson State in the SWAC championship game Saturday night at Gateway Center in College Park, Georgia.
Alabama State entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed but upset the No. 2 Tigers in the final to earn an automatic bid.
This will be the first trip to the NCAA tournament for the Hornets since 2011. They've never won a game, but they could be headed to a First Four game in Dayton.
Madlock, a Memphis native who played and later coached at Melrose, served as a Tigers assistant coach from 2018 to 2021 before leaving for South Carolina State, where he earned his first permanent head coaching job (he briefly served as the interim Ole Miss coach in 2018). He took over at Alabama State a year later.
There are more connections to Memphis and the Tigers, too. Alabama State's leading scorer Amarr Knox played at Bartlett, and Madlock's son TJ Madlock — who played his high school ball at Houston — is also on the team and scored seven points in Saturday's win.
The Hornets will learn their NCAA tournament opponent and destination on Sunday.
