A former Minnesota native is heading north of the border to play football in 2025.
Trey Lance, who starred at Marshall High School in Minnesota from 2014-17, is joining the Saskatchewan Roughriders for the 2025 CFL season, according to TSN's Dave Naylor. Lance spent the 2024 season as the Dallas Cowboys' third-string quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush.
The move to the CFL comes just four years after the San Francisco 49ers took Lance with the third pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The 49ers were so enamored with Lance, who stood 6'4" and 224 pounds, that they traded up from pick No. 12 to get the North Dakota State prospect.
But Lance's career never took off in San Francisco. An ankle injury in 2022 limited him to just two games, opening the door for rookie seventh-round pick Brock Purdy to seize the job. Lance was traded to the Cowboys for a fourth-round pick following the season.
Lance completed 56.6% of his passes in four seasons for 1,063 yards, five touchdown passes, and four interceptions. He is still young, turning 25 in May, so perhaps a good showing in the CFL could earn him a second chance in the NFL. But he'll have to show he can hang with the CFL's best first.
