The New Orleans Saints should add another running back and have been connected to Ashton Jeanty in the first round. If he's on the board in Round 1, former Saints running back Deuce McAllister would pass on him. Despite playing the same position, McAllister doesn't think the pick makes sense, looking at where the league is and where the Saints are.

The top-10 running back has become a rarity in the NFL draft. The Atlanta Falcons are the only team to do that in the last five years when they selected Bijan Robinson in 2023.

The Saints currently pick ninth overall, and McAllister posed a couple of questions to illustrate why he wouldn't draft Jeanty top-10.

"If I'm picking that high, why am I picking that high?" Most times, it's because you aren't a good team. Though New Orleans dealt with injuries, they also aren't that good of a team.

Secondly, "If I'm bad, I probably have multiple holes. Is a running back going to hide or change that much?"

McAllister doesn't slam the door on that possibility, but he is also aware it isn't likely.

The resurgence of running back value has transpired over the last year, but most of the running backs highlighted have joined situations where they can amplify the offense.

McAllister believes the Saints need to add more pieces before drafting a running back. It's no shot at Jeanty, who he said "has the potential to be an All-Pro player." McAllister has Jeanty in a tier of his own in this class, but he'd rather grab a guy in Tier 2 and another position in the first round. McAllister feels you could get more effectiveness out of that strategy as opposed to drafting Jeanty at No. 9.
