He passed on way too soon.

Maurice Lucas was a prototype Power Forward and an enforcer. It's ironic that the Suns have neither on the team this season.

Although his stay here was short (because John MacLeod didn't know how to coach Champion caliber players and outstanding defenders such as Luke and DJ), I think Luke was my favorite Sun of all time.

The thing I enjoyed best about him (as well as Dr. J) was his beautiful bank shot. Cha-ching and in it went.

I used to run into Maurice Lucas at the Smitty's at Shea & Tatum, which served the Town of Paradise Valley crowd. That's why Fry's, which is there now, made it the first in the chain to go upscale. Their next one will be in north Scottsdale.

Anyway, when I first met Luke shopping there, I expected to see a hefty guy. But he was strong and agile. And 6'9" compared to my 5'10" of course.

Bladder cancer. It's a shame. Thank you for the memories, Luke. And a reminder to the '10-'11 Suns of what a Power Forward should look like.

I'm sure Mr. Lucas would appreciate your using his death as another excuse to complain about the Suns.

Objection! Counsel for the defense is misusing the "Quote" feature to add his own comment. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200. Go directly to jail. :)

That was back in the day when every team had an enforcer. Now the NBA is softer with less defense. Scores are lower now because players back then knew how to make mid range shots on the move, and the shot clock rarely got low with all teams playing at a faster pace. You went down the lane at your own risk with guys like Lucas patrolling the boards. There was a lot more shooting and less athleticism back in the day. Now it's more dunks and lay ups. Different game. That's why it's hard to compare guys like Lucas to players of today. He was one of the top players in his day.

Oh, for Mo Lucas in this day and age... the game hasn't changed that much!
