LOS ANGELES -- Former pro football quarterback Todd Marinovich was in an Irvine jail Monday, serving a 90-day term stemming from his arrest in Newport Beach for possessing methamphetamine.

Marinovich is on probation for a 2001 felony drug conviction. He's being held without bail.

Marinovich, 35, pleaded guilty Wednesday to a felony count of possessing a controlled substance and two misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and the unauthorized possession of hypodermic needles, said Mark Macaulay of the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

Marinovich had been jailed since he was arrested Aug. 28 near McFadden Avenue and 22nd Street after officers saw him skateboarding in a prohibited area, according to Sgt. Mark Hamilton of the Newport Beach Police Department.

The Mission Viejo native tried to run, and when officers caught up with him they found methamphetamine and three syringes, police said.

The former USC star, who was a first-round draft pick for the Los Angeles Raiders, was on probation for a 2001 conviction for felony heroin possession prior to the latest arrest.

Marinovich entered his plea before Orange County Superior Court Judge Craig Robison on Wednesday. He had been scheduled for a pretrial hearing, a court clerk said.

Marinovich was supposed to have served 80 days in jail stemming from a 2003 arrest in Los Angeles County but had not done so, the clerk said, adding that Robison ordered Marinovich to serve both sentences concurrently.

Robison also placed Marinovich on three years formal probation in connection with the Newport Beach arrest, the clerk said.

Marinovich, who had 18 days jail credit when he was sentenced, is at the minimum security James A. Musick Facility in Irvine, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
