Tiara Brown is a world champion.

The Fort Myers native stunned the professional boxing establishment when she upset heavily favored Australian Skye Nicolson in Sydney on March 22 to win the WBC world featherweight championship.

The victory is the high point of a more than 20-year boxing journey for the 36-year-old Brown, a former police officer in Washington D.C. and in her hometown of Fort Myers.

When did Tiara Brown start boxing?​


Brown started boxing at the Fort Myers Police Athletic League in 2001, shortly after turning 13 years old.

She built herself into one of the nation's best amateur boxers, becoming a three-time USA Boxing National Champion in 2012, 2014 and 2015. Brown also captured a gold medal at the 2012 Women's World Championships in China. She participated in the Olympic trials in both 2012 and 2016 but failed to qualify for the U.S. National Team.

What is Tiara Brown's pro boxing record?​


Brown, who turned professional in 2016, is undefeated as a pro boxer with a record of 19-0. In 2019, she won her first pro title, defeating Angel Gladeny to capture the North American Boxing Organization's super featherweight championship.

Who won the Tiara Brown-Sky Nicholson fight?​


Brown, the WBC's No. 1 ranked featherweight contender, was a decided underdog heading into the fight against the undefeated champion Nicolson, a southpaw with a 12-0 record who was making her third title defense.

Brown won the fight in a split decision, with two judges scoring the bout 97-93 and 96-94 in her favor. The other judge scored it 96-94 in favor of Nicolson.
