FORT WALTON BEACH ― The Pines Course at the Fort Walton Beach Golf Club is significantly upgrading its greens.

A crew from King Villages Landscaping & Golf Construction Inc. began work last week to replace the sod on all 18 greens, according to a news release from the City of Fort Walton Beach.

Built in 1961, the Pines Course was the first of the golf club’s two 18-hole courses. Over time, the greens have developed five or six different species of grass, known as “off-types,” each with distinct characteristics. According to golf course maintenance manager Richie Edwards, this variation makes putting less predictable and maintenance more challenging.

“When you putt, and your ball is running nice and straight, and then all of a sudden it pulls over here and then it pulls over that way, that’s because it’s running through different types of grass,” Edwards said in the release.

During the renovation, workers will remove all grass and organic material to a depth of 4 to 6 inches. They will then fill the greens with new soil and fumigate them to eliminate any remaining plant material.

Crews will begin sprigging the greens with TifEagle Bermudagrass, a variety specifically developed for golf greens, in May. Edwards said that weather permitting, the greens should be ready for play by September.

During the renovation, the Pines Course will feature temporary greens and remain open exclusively to golf club members to minimize foot and cart traffic. The Oaks Course will not be affected.

The project is funded with $584,000 from Okaloosa County’s tourist development tax, which is collected on short-term rentals and designated for tourism-related amenities, activities and environmental improvements. An additional $29,710 comes from the county’s half-cent surtax, approved by voters in 2018 for infrastructure projects.
