EAST LANSING — The Fowler boys basketball team will be playing for a state title Saturday morning.
Behind a strong 3-point shooting performance in the opening half, the Eagles knocked off Allen Park Inter-City Baptist, 59-43, on Thursday night in a Division 4 state semifinal at Breslin Center.
The win sends Fowler to its first state championship since 2002, where it will face Wyoming Tri-unity Christian at 10 a.m. Saturday. The game is a rematch of a season opener that Fowler won, 62-59, in early December. The Eagles will be trying to capture their first state title since 1952 and just the second in program history.
Sharp outside shooting put Fowler (25-3) in position to capture a state title. The Eagles knocked down eight 3-pointers in the first half while building a double-digit lead. Jacob Halfmann and Aaron Simon each hit back-to-back 3s to open the scoring to set the tone for the night for the Eagles,, who jumped out to an 11-2 lead.
Halfmann, Simon and Asher Koenigsknecht each hit multiple 3s during the strong first half.
Simon and Koenigsknecht each had 15 points and Halfmann scored 14 points to lead the Eagles. The trio combined to go 10-of-21 from 3-point range for Fowler, which has reached the championship game by winning five of its six state tournament games by double figures.
