The primary focus of this off-season shoud be on straightening out the team's defensive woes. The offense is pretty much set...one key addition, like All-Pro LG Alan Faneca, would do very nicely. Now, if the Cardinals could find a way to keep opposing teams under 21 points on a regular basis...hello playoffs!

The Cardinals need to upgrade their pass rush and their cover ability...it's that simple. With an improved pass rush and tighter coverage, the Cardinal defense may be able to close out the close games...something they were unable to do with any semblance of consistency this past season.

The inside 3 of LDE-Dockett, NT-Watson/Branch, and RDE-Smith could be dynamic, especially with another year training under John Lott. The depth at DE is suspect, although it would be great if Chris Cooper returns to form, and he is signed through 2008. Rodney Bailey is a UFA, and will likely be re-signed if the team does not draft a DE. Bailey is decent run stuffer, but not a very good pass rusher.

The inside LBers are set: Gerald Hayes at SILB and Karlos Dansby at WILB. Dansby will play for a one year franchise tag salary if a long term deal isn't worked out. Hopefully, Dansby won't miss a ton of practices in training camp. Monty Beisel adds solid depth and is signed through 2008. And keep an eye of David Holloway, who may turn some heads in training camp as a depth player.

The OLB situation is in complete flux. SOLB Calvin Pace is a UFA and needs to be re-signed. Pace showed impressive all-around play at the position as a run stuffer, pass rusher and cover man. At WOLB, one would hope that Chike Okeafor will return healthy and highly motivated. It would seem that the club will need to let go of Bertrand Berry and his $4M salary, although it may be wise to try to get him to take a pay cut to remain in the mix. While Berry has lost a half a step and become injury prone, he's the kind of player who could surprise everyone with a highly dedicated off-season. Darryl Blackstock will likely be tendered as an RFA...but he will have to show Calvin Pace-like improvement to stay in the team's plans beyond 2008. Joe Tafoya is a solid contributor and high energy guy, but he's not much of an edge rusher.

At CB the Cards are thin in depth. Rod Hood is an above average LCB. At RCB, Eric Green has shown excellent flashes, but hasn't started for a whole season yet, due to inconsistent play and injuries. Behind them the cupboard is dry...although feisty special teamer Michael Adams might make a push in 2008 as a nickle back.

At Safety the Cards need SS Adrian Wilson to return healthy and determined. Wilson was not having a particularly strong year (for him) even before he was hurt...and as we saw, his impact on the defense was sorely missed. At FS, incumbent starter, Terrence Holt needs to be replaced. Aaron Francisco never really challenged for the job due to a rash of injuries. And Antrel Rolle would have to prove that he can play well in space, as a run supporter and deep third/half/middle ballhawk.

The two free agents most talked about on the board are OLB Terrell Suggs (Ravens) and CB Drayton Florence (Chargers). Both of these players would certainly fit. Suggs could revitalize the Cardinals pass rush...but his price tag may be too lofty. Florence could challenge Eric Green for the starting RCB spot and provide solid depth. His demotion this past season should motivate him, and it may make hs salary demands more realistic.

However, it would appear that the Cardinals will have to use the draft to upgrade their defensive talent and depth...and, if that's the case, the Cardinals will have a difficult decision to make at #16, whether to take a CB like Mike Jenkins (6-0, 200, South Florida) or a pass rusher like Quentin Groves (6-4, 254, Auburn).

If such is the case, it may behoove the Cardinals to take the pass rusher first, seeing as they will not be picking until the low 20s in second round...and by then there will be DBs available still, but the decent pass rushers will be gone.

Thus, at this point, the draft could very well look something like this:

1. OLB/DE Quentin Groves, Auburn.

2. CB Simeon Castille, Alabama.

3. FS Marcus Watts, Kansas St.

4. WR Sammie Stroughter, Oregon St.

5. RB Andre Callender, Boston College

6. P Durant Brooks, Georgia Tech

7. LB Mike Klinkenborg, Iowa

I think we could address the pass rusher through FA w/ Terrell Suggs. Right now I feel he would be more effective than a Groves or Harvey as until last year was a perennial Pro Bowler. If we could get Drayton Florence I would still be on the Cason bandwagon in Round 1 but Stewart would be awfully tempting. Ether way sign Suggs draft either Cason or Stewart in Round 1 and either Talib or Rice in Round 2.

I think its realistic and we are at that stage now where we can go after high priced FA's since we are only a few pieces away. I say go hard for Suggs and Fanaca. Try for a lower tier CB and then grab two in the draft.

That is a really good post.

I like the idea of keeping Berry if he excepts a pay cut.

I like that a lot, except I would like to get Trae Williams in the second round instead of Thomas in the third.

Mitch,

Are you comfortable with Hood and Green starting? I would like to us sign a #1 free agent CB. We could draft a CB in the 1st round but most rookies don't contribute much in their 1st year CB is the first round and we haven't had good luck drafting . If Pace is signed we should be ok at OLB. The OL also needs to be improved. Hopefully the right side will improve with experience. Wells needs to be replace and Gandy is not the long term answer at LT. I would keep Wells as a backup.

I want Pace re-signed too, but I don't think we'll be set at OLB if he is. We'd only have Okeafor coming off of injury, Berry (who may only still be here after a pay cut), and Pace. That isn't enough, IMO.

What #1 FA Corners are out there this year? Don't say Florence...he's not a #1...he's a 2-3 at best.

Draft

For some reason part of my reply was cut off. I had them going RB in Rd. 1. My reasons were:
1. Edge not getting any younger.
2. Probably felt, in hindsight, they should have gone for AP in the last Draft.

The more I think about it the less I want to go the FA route for our #1 corner.

I want them to get Faneca, Kawika Mitchell (LB depth), and Paul Spicer (DE depth) in FA.

And I will trust Wiz's evaluation on players for the draft. I want them to pick between one of the 4 players for the #16 pick (BPA of these 4)

1. Cason
2. Jenkins (USF)
3. Mendenhall
4. Stewart

If they go corner first pick then I get a Felix Jones in the second round and if the go RB I go Aqib Talib in the 2nd round.

Asomugha (if he's not franchised), Trufant, and Samuels.
IF we spent money on the market on a CB, any of those three would excite me. Florence would leave me with the feeling that we didn't improve, we just got more of what we got.

We definitely need someone with some break-away speed on Offense IMHO. Either at RB or WR. Someone who can take it to the house in one play. It seems like if we have that it would more likely keep the opposing 'D' on their heels and open up more things on Offense.

IF we sign a FA CB I will bet the average fan will say "Who?" when the name pops up......one of those "below the radar" guys no one has heard of ('cause he ain't done much in his career)......

my draft would look like this:
1-Mendenhall-RB,we have to get younger and get some big play ability
2-Tyson Jackson-DE, very good 3-4 DE prospect
3-Dominique Rogers-Cromartie-CB-outrageous athlete,but raw
4-Tommy Blake-DE/OLB-will fall due to off field issues, pass rusher worth the risk
5-Larry Grant-OLB, high potential type player
6-Dexter Jackson-WR App St.-speed, slot type WR in the Randle-el mode
7-OL-the main OL will be the signing of Faneca, draft for depth here.

I don't think Jackson will come out this year. He will probably be the top rated DE in next year's draft and LSU will be in the NC race as well.

Blake is the guy that had the nervous breakdown or battled w/ depression and only played in like in 3 or 4 games. Huge red flag.

True, and I find it very sad. We sit with one of the best cap situations in the league, and it seems our FO is already counting us out of the running for most of the top players. Ugh.
