With the 2025 NFL Draft quickly approaching, few starting-caliber players are left on the open market.
One of the top names remaining is cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., an unrestricted free agent after completing his rookie contract with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Despite playing in just four games last season due to a shoulder injury, Samuel Jr. is a talented defender entering the prime of his career. So why is he still available?
NFL Media's Mike Garafolo states medical concerns are 'pausing the market' for Samuel Jr.
Garafolo notes there are red flags concerning Samuel's neck and back, otherwise he'd be signed by now. The former second-round pick visited the Cardinals last month, but left without a deal.
Cornerback-needy teams will likely revisit Samuel after the draft — could the Eagles be one of them? Philadelphia has historically been a destination for players looking to rebuild their value. CB Isaiah Rodgers, for example, signed with the Eagles amidst his gambling suspension and played a critical role en route to a championship.
Samuel Jr. is the son of NFL legend Asante Samuel Sr., who was a 4x Pro Bowler, 2x Super Bowl champion, and played in Philadelphia from 2008-2011. Bringing in his son would be a fun story and give the Eagles another young defensive back to deploy with Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.
Since entering the league in 2021, Samuel Jr. has recorded 176 tackles, six interceptions, and 37 pass breakups.
