Free/easy mp3 splitter/editor?

Say I wanted to easily and freely cut a snippet out of an existing mp3 and save it as a new mp3. Can anyone recommend any tool or software to do so?

No Windows Sound Recorder please.

'Cool edit 2000' was awesone for this stuff... It was free but last I looked it was not cheap... I will look and see if I still have the free intall somewhere...

you can use this version of it for 30 days... but I will see if I can post the full version... there is a shareware version that I had downloaded a long time ago... actually in 2000 and I am pretty sure I have the whole file saved.

I just searched and found that link, I ran it here at work and it looks the same... I have the full Pro version at home that I use to make loops and clips for home movie editing and such... Hopefully that free version has all the features.
