Yes, you can a lump sum for life or $12 a month, I am a cheap bastard and I pay every month. You must have a phone line or network connection near, it has to connect every 2 weeks to update the guide, no if, and, or buts about it.

I dont get this...

I have direct tv and got out of having a phone line connected. I have moved 13 times in my life and never had a house/apt with a phone line behind my tv.

So I cant get tivo because my nearest phone line is 2 rooms away?

Actually, I have Directv with Tivo in two rooms at home. One has a phone line hooked in, the other one doesn't.

Tivo still works. It has an annoying pop up that says to "Make a phone call soon" that I have to click "ok" on occasion to make go away, but other than that, no problems.

I have mine connected via a wireless Linksys USB. Much, much faster downloads. And sadly enuf, it was the easiest device I've ever connected to my router. No software installation, just plugged it in and TIVO did the rest.

That is correct, sir.

Apparently, all the "cool" features of Tivo require a phone line. That's the only reason I do not have it.

What's this wireless thing you guys are talking about?

If you have a Linksys Wireless Router (WRT54G) or I believe any wireless router, you can buy a wireless usb device that will plug into the TIVO box and pull the channel information from the internet. The wireless usb device can also be used for other things like hooking up a printer so the printer doesn't have to be in the same room as the PC..neat stuff

Thanks, NavyVet! My computer is from 1994, so I don't think this is an option for me, lol!
