Kylian Mbappé’s return to the France team led to scathing verdicts from French media following the 2-0 Nations League quarter-final first leg defeat in Croatia.

"This was ultimately a real disappointment, to put it mildly," wrote Le Figaro.

For the 26-year-old captain, it was his first appearance in the national jersey since September 9. In addition to the Real Madrid striker, Ousmane Dembélé of Paris Saint-Germain also faced heavy criticism.

"The two men are the main culprits, but they are not the only ones, as the French attack was non-existent on Thursday," Le Figaro added.

Despite having more possession, corners, and shots on goal than the efficient Croatians, the French rarely posed a real threat.

"Neither Ousmane Dembélé nor Kylian Mbappé could replicate in the French national team what they have been doing so brilliantly with their respective clubs since the start of 2025," commented L'Équipe.

"Mbappé shot a lot (six times) and often hit the target, but he lacked efficiency."

Croatia secured the win in Split with goals from Ante Budimir in the 26th minute and Ivan Perisic in first-half injury time. The second leg is on Sunday in Paris.

Mbappé, who was rested by France coach Didier Deschamps earlier in the season as he got used to life in Madrid, has now gone six international matches without scoring.
