I think a lot of people are sleeping on Green. I also think Antrell Rolle will be a Pro Bowler next year, although at FS. I also think we will add a CB and OLB in the draft. So really there is alot of guys who can develop next year to make those percieved weaknesses, instead strengths.

I think we'd be okay with what we have at FS, personally (ahem, after we cut Holt). Green may develop more, and I damn sure hope he does. A lot is currently riding on him. Will he become a top CB? Mmmm, that would be a heck of a strech. A solid starter? Maybe so. Where does that leave us? With almost zero depth and little hope of a youngster stepping up to provide it. Adding a CB in the draft is a crapshoot, at best (see Rolle). Adding a top pass rusher via the draft? That could help, or it could backfire. Even if we manage to get a CB and a pass rusher in the draft that turn out to be good, it won't necessarily be this season. My point is that if we go into the draft with two glaring needs, as we currently have, then we're going to be forced to draft for need. If we don't manage to get those players via the draft, we don't have any young guys that we can hope will step up and adequately fill the role. That's why I think it's vital we find some help through FA. It doesn't have to be big name help, I think trends have proven. Jovan Haye (sp?), anyone? Not a big name, but a guy that could probably help.

I find it ironic that we are going to be looking for all the diamond in the rough free agents when apparently many teams are valuing Calvin Pace by that same viewpoint.

The more I think about it the more important I find it is we retain him. He wants to be here and did well in the first season under new leadership and a defense he now understands.

If someone offers him something as outrageous like what BIG got last year (in relation to the percieved market value for OL) then we can use the money else where. But otherwise if terms are near we need to retain ALL good young players.

Pass rush, secondary revamping.. pass rush, secondary revamping..

We're not winning anything until we address these two issues that plague us every season..

Offensively, i think we should keep James and draft a RB (deep RB draft) in the 3rd round.. Sign Faneca..cut Gandy.. move Wells to LT.. cut whoever else can free up some space.. Shipp, Smith, etc..

Defensively.. Berry gone, Holt gone, dont bother with Pace if it will allow us the $$$ to sign Faneca and some depth upgrades via FA..

But seriously, we need pash rush help bigtime and we need a legit stud corner, and someone back with Adrian that knows how to play the safety position..

I dont know if we can do it via draft, at least not all of it.. but we should focus on upgrading at least two of those holds significantly with our 1st and 2nd round picks..

At this point i'd focus on adding the true #1 CB and the pash rusher we need.. i suppose we can gamble with Rolle and Francisco in the back and maybe add another guy in the 4th or 5th round.. I dont love the safeties in this draft outside of Kenny Phillips, so id probably cross my fingers that Rolle can make the transition, ADub stays healthy, and Francisco can at least be competent..

So im leaning towards a CB, DE/OLB pass rusher, RB for rounds 1-3..

Rounds 4-7 i'd go Oline depth, S, WR, P.. not necassarily in that order..

To be honest i dont have specific picks at this point, havent looked in depth at things.. but i think if we can head into the season with:

- First Round CB, Hood, Green as our top 3.. we'll be in solid shape.. also wouldnt mind signing a mediocre FA Cb for depth given how brutal things got when a couple guys got injured last yr..

-ADub, Rolle, Francisco, 4-6 rounder at the safety positions

-Front 7 unit: Dockett, Smith, Cooper, Okeafor, 2nd round pick, Watson, Branch, Dansby, Hayes, Beisel, etc.. If they can afford to bring Pace back without screwing up our ability to sign Faneca then fine.. if not, so be it..

On offense, as I said, sure up that line with Faneca, move Wells over, u can axe Gandy and save some money.. draft a depth guy, preferably a future LT in rounds 4-6.. get a WR somewhere 4-6 to go with Fitz, Quan, Morey.. someone that can stretch the field..

And as I said, keep Edge another yr, but look to draft a Forte or Charles in round 3..

Oh, you mean something like this http://www.arizonasportsfans.com/vb/showthread.php?t=106548 :)

Oh and I like Merling more and more at 16. He can play both DE and OLB, and can play the run (something I think we showed signs of doing well, but sometimes were gashed badly) or rush the passer.
