Back in December 2000 I purchased a ViewSonic VA800 TFT Flat screen moniter. It was one of the first of the flat screen moniters. I paid approx $1400 with the extended warranty and I never was disappointed by the performance of the moniter.

Fast forward to the early part of this year and the screen developed a solid red line. I took it to Fry"s for repair or replacemnt under my extended warranty. They had the moniter for approx 30 days when they callled and said the it couldn't be repaired and that the replacement was in. I just went to Fry's expecting to get a ViewSonic moniter when they try to give me a 17" flat screen made by AOC.

I compained that I had bought a ViewSonic and that is what I had warrantied. Well, of course, in section 7 of their warranty it states that they can replace it with anything they want as long as it is comparable. The AOC didn't have all the features of the ViewSonic,I rejected it. The clerk said they would have to call the home office and they would call me later today or tomorrow.

My question is how good is the AOC and where can I find any evaluations of it compared to the ViewSonic.

I feel that I have been deceived on this as I wasn't told of this replacement policy at time of purchase. I bought a Cadillac and when it broke down they want to exchange a top of the line Kia for it.

Thanks in advance for your help in this.

I think that's pretty much how most places do it. I know Best Buy will fix or replace something under their extended warranty, and if they do not carry the same one any longer - they replace it with a comparable model.

Is it in your warranty paperwork that you signed at the time of purchase? They always get you with the small print.

Ryan, or doing a Google search of your own, will likely get some specs/comparisons. :D

In my performance gurantee that I purchased back in 12/2000 it stated that "it shall be replaced with items of like kind and quality." Their new policy states that they can replace withwhatever they want as long as the specs are similar.

I think what purchased states that they can't geive me something cheaper. I paid 1599 for the moniter back in 12/2000. It was the best available at that time and I feel I should get the best available today. Even if the best is a larger monitor.

I would look just compare the specs for the Viewsonic and whatever they want to give you as a replacement.

I would check the contrast ratio, response time, along with the native resolution and screen size. If they are going to give you another brand besides Viewsonic I would see if they are going to include a renewal of the extended warranty.

Just an update on the Fry's saga. They have informed me that they will be replacing my Viewsonic with a Samsung 19" model 191T. This is an older model that they have to find and has the same specs as my VS.
they do have a 191Tplus in the store. Ihaven't been able to determine the difference but am going to try for this or see if they will upgrade to the 21" 213T

Good deal. Samsung is a pretty good brand from what I hear.

That's not a realistic expectation, in my mind, because the prices of LCD's have fallen through the basement in the past year. At this time 1600 will buy you a pair of 20" 16ms response LCDs (with $300 left over for a new video card!). They very fact that they're going to give you a 191T is in this case a testament to somebody's comittment to customer service, as it's a larger and better monitor. Yes it is the "older" version but the new 192's are almost identical, and many people prefer the extra features the 191T has. Take the Samsung and consider it a win.

Just to update and finish the saga. They did replace the viewsonic with the Samsung 191tplus. I went in on Oct 26th and they said they haven't heard from their home office yet. I then spoke to a supervisor, pointing out that it had been almost 16 weeks since I brought my old moniter in. I suggested that maybe the store manager could ok it, she checked and said no but he would call the ho and for me to call the nest day.

I returned to the store the next day and they said they were just waiting on a fax. Well it took 2 days for the fax but I did get the new moniter, Turns out that this one had a couple of bad pixels. Took it back last Tuesday and they gave me a another one.

The best thing about all this is that if you are going to buy a performance gurantee check the language.
