Florida State baseball swept a doubleheader against Notre Dame to secure a third consecutive ACC series victory and end a seven-game road trip.
The No. 4 Seminloes (23-4) won game one behind a pitching gem from Joey Volini and blasted Notre Dame in game two with a 17-run outburst. The doubleheader came a day later than anticipated, with weather forcing the scheduled Saturday two-game slate to start Sunday morning.
It was a productive road stretch for the Seminoles, who went 5-2 in the seven games away from Tallahassee.
FSU moves to 7-2 in ACC play with the series win over Notre Dame.
Volini threw a seven-inning complete game to start the day for the Seminoles. He struck out 11 and allowed two runs on four hits to earn his seventh win of the season.
He got early trouble by loading the bases in the first inning. A run scored when Volini hit Carson Tinney, but he quickly responsed with a strike out and ground out to end the inning. Jayce Lee would hit a home run in the second inning, the last run Volini allowed in the game.
Myles Bailey scored on a past ball in the second inning to give FSU a run. Notre Dame held a 2-1 lead going into the fourth inning before Brody DeLamielleure hit an RBI double to tie the game. He would come around to score on a fielder's choice hit by Gage Harrelson later in the inning, pushing the Seminoles ahead 3-2.
Harrelson bookmarked the game with a solo home run in the ninth, his third of the season, to secure the 4-2 win.
While the story of game one was the performance from Volini on the mound, the Seminoles' offense stole the show in the second game of the doubleheader.
Max Williams quickly put the Seminoles ahead with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, the first of five home runs hit in the game. FSU added three more runs in the first inning, with a Hunter Carns RBI double before a two RBI single from James Hankerson Jr.
Alex Lodise hit his first of two home runs in the second inning, a solo shot, to kickstart a seven-run second inning for the Seminoles. Hankerson recorded three more RBI in the inning, hitting a three RBI double, quickly followed by Carter McCulley's first career home run.
FSU added a pair of runs in the third to lead 12-0 heading into the bottom of the third. Notre Dame scored three runs in the home half of the inning.
The Seminoles led 16-3 going into the sixth inning thanks to a Hankerson home run and DeLamielleure sac fly. The Irish, however, scored five in the sixth to cut the lead to 16-8. Notre Dame added one more run in the seventh to make it 16-9 before a Lodise solo shot in the ninth secured a 17-9 win for FSU.
Wes Mendes started and threw 3.2 innings where he allowed six walks, struck out three and allowed three earned runs on four hits. FSU used five pitchers in relief, with Chris Knier earning a win in his 1.2 inning relief appearance.
