Phillip Fulmer, who a decade ago brought Tennessee its first national championship in 47 years, will not return as the Vols' coach next year, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

An announcement is being planned for later Monday at Neyland Stadium. The Vols (3-6, 1-5 SEC) have lost four straight games and are in danger of suffering their second losing season in the last four years.

Fulmer, who's won 150 games at his alma mater and is the dean of SEC coaches, met with Tennessee officials Monday morning, and they reached a mutual agreement that it would be best for all parties if Fulmer was not back next season.

There had been increasing scrutiny on Fulmer, who took over full time as head coach in 1993 and has been at his alma mater as a player, assistant coach and head coach for more than 30 years.

The Vols won the national title in 1998 and were one of the top programs in all of college football in the 1990s, but the program hasn't been the same this decade. They've lost 31 games since the end of the 2001 season.

OK I am actually kind of stunned about this. I really did not expect that.

Tennessee is probably one of the top 10 jobs in college football, so when you go a decade without winning your conference the natives will be restless. Not to mention Meyer and Saban has significantly raised the bar in the SEC as you can't just recruit (or buy) a bunch of athletes and expect to win.

I don't buy the "mutual agreement" bit. I heard Fullmer on the radio the other day explaining why he should remain as coach. He was definitely forced out, although I'm sure his $6 million buyout will soften the blow.

Knocking up his secretary a few years ago didn't do him in, but that shortage of SEC titles did.

Steve Spurrier, native son of Johnson City, TN. Could be.

I'm sure Peterson will get a call from Tennessee, and I think Washington will also make a run at him. I think he'll listen but stay at Boise State.

This is total idiocy. Fulmer put them back on the football map. He lost his longtime OC this year and needed to find a new one. He certainly wasn't washed up as a coach.

Tennessee is deluding itself thinking they will do better, just as Houston Nutt is proving Arkansas didn't properly appreciate him either.

I absolutely do not hate the SEC. Never have. My wife's family all went to Alabama or Auburn and I sort of adopted Auburn as my SEC team from the time of Pat Sullivan to Terry Beasly passing attack.

In 1970 the game where Auburn team blocked 2 4th quarter punts for scores to beat Bear Bryant 17-16 .

Then there was Bo Jackson.

Anyway, my recurring argument has been that the vaunted SEC dominance is cyclical only and is currently incorect. The Big 12 is at least their equal right now.

Fulmer was a good coach and was shafted by the boosters.

People in SEC country don't have much of a sense of humor, when it comes to football. I think that is a funny line and since all pumps are self serve, down there, it is just a throw away line. Lane Kiffin just might breathe some fun into SEC football. Most of their coaches are a bit too stiff. Don't forget, Kiffin replaced Phil Fullmer. That in and of itself is an upgrade.

Yes and no. Steve Spurrier was just as insulting as Kiffin and it was entertaining. Especially because he won and mocked those who hated him.

However, Fullmer was a very good coach. Kiffin is unproven.
