OK, anyone know what's the difference between sending a private message the old way, and 'posting' a visitor message on somebody's new profile page?

I am pretty sure that others can see the messages you post on someone's profile page.

And what exactly is the point of that?
It seems like much of new stuff is geared to a more exhibitionist or self-absorbed (i.e. adolescent) group -- closed social groups anyone can see, your messages being public -- is there a real practical value to these kinds of things?
