Fundamentals vs. Athleticism

Being blown out by Italy and nearly losing to Germany has validated my concerns that our game at home is beginning to suffer. This team has a lot of flashy athleticism and natural skill, and can jump through the roof, but they are weak in fundamentals. This game is still about shooting, passing, team defense, smart play, and leadership. Some of that exists here and there on this team, but right now, Italy and Germany are teaching us how it's done. I think it's a solid trend that is forming...how are you going to learn these things if you aren't learning it at the college level? Athleticism can compensate sometimes for the fundamentals, but we won't win the gold unless this team can get serious and play as a team. If they took all foreign players in the NBA and put them on a squad and they played this team, we'd be schooled every time. Right now, the foreigners are bringing the fundamentals to our game. And if we don't wake up, it won't matter if we send the NBA's best, it'll always be close.

I'm still mad at the way Carmelo Anthony guaranteed a gold medal. It's a perfect example of this team's immaturity, and a major reason why a number of people are losing interest in the NBA.

Sorry for the rant. Glad to get that off my chest.

Maximus.
