Stephen A. Smith is going crazy right now about Kobe shooting 54% over the past four games. Meanwhile, Nash has shot 53.6% for the whole season, while Kobe's season average is at 47%.

Yes, four straight 50 point games is extremely rare, but it doesn't make you the "best player in the NBA," as Smith puts it.

He is in the top 5. And I am a hater.

I don't think there's any doubt that Kobe is the best player in the league right now, because unlike the other guys who are close to him offensively, Nash, Dirk, LeBron, Wade...he can play better D than all of them. Shooting 54% is amazing because of the amount of shots he takes and the difficulty of those shots. Over the last 4 games he has taken about 2-3x more shots than Nash takes. I hate Kobe, but he is the best right now. I don't really care about that because unlike some Lakers fans, I don't really see them winning any championships with Kobe, at least not anytime soon.

He can play better D but that doesn't mean he does. I've heard laker fans complain about his defense all season.

He was slowed down at the start of the season by his knee injury, but his defense was still better than those other guys and he is showing it more now. And last season he was showing it too when he was on the All-defensive 1st team. Now that he is starting to distribute the ball more I don't think there's anyone better than him in the game now. I'm tired of all the Kobe love and the comparisons to Jordan that I've been hearing lately. Lakers fans are really annoying.

Well I can agree with that he is the best player over the last week. much too short a time frame to declare he is the best in the leauge or even the best right now. That logic tells me if some one scores 60 tonight they are the best in the leauge right now.

He was the best player in the league before this season started too in my opinion. He is better overall than any other top 10 player. I don't judge by a few games.

Ugh, I hate Kobe. It makes me feel sick even thinking about the guy. I'm going to stay away from the other NBA boards and post here more. I don't like arguing for Kobe.

4 straight 50+ point games is just sick!

He probably is the best all around player in the league.

Some big guys are more dominant but they have to get the ball where they can do something with it. Kobe can go anywhere on he court and gets a lot of points on the perimeter.

No doubt Kobe is an amazing player and I think he is capable of dropping 50+ on any team in the league. However, consider that in each of the last four games, the Lakers played the bottom of the league and barely hung on to win. They need his "sick" performances just to stay in the playoff race against crappy teams.

Point is, that the rest of the team is going to have to be involved and productive if the Lakers are going to beat a quality opponent. Would there be the same level of hype if he scored 50+ in four straight and the team still lost? Could happen when they start playing better teams.

i think he deserves to be mentioned in the race. How can you not. like him or not he took it upon himself to help a desperate team turn things around. at least for the time being. is he jordan? no way. I agree he is a good defender. Although i would give wade a slight edge at the defensive end. I just think wade plays harder on that side.

That was in 3 quarters. After three quarters it was Kobe 62, Mavs 61. The absolute sickest game I've ever seen...we were up 30 so he sat the fourth, but it was far more impressive than his 81 point game.
