So my son's laptop died. I bought a refurbished HP desktop from Fry's electronics last week to replace it. However, it was not set up for wireless internet access.

So I bought a NetGear usb G Wireless adapter kit and installed it over the weekend. Although I can get on the internet, the signal is soooo weak, I keep loosing connection to the web. My G wireless router is with Linksys.

Is the problem the compatibility with NetGear and Linksys?

I have been told I should upgrade to a N router. Will this help? Why did my son's old laptop have no problems accessing the internet in his bedroom but we are having problems with the PC in the same location?

Obviously, I am no techie, so I hope that someone on this board can help me.

Thanks in advance,
CM

My understanding is Wireless N has faster speeds and longer range the G, but they cost more. Different brands shouldn't be a problem, it could be that that dongle you bought just wasn't as good as the old laptops wifi.
