OBSERVATIONS ON TEAM TALENT

Since it's a bit sssslow right now around the NFL, we've been trying to gin up some stuff worth reporting -- short of just making things up.

So we asked one NFL personnel department for their thoughts on the most talented rosters in the league. The following five teams were identified, not necessarily in this order: Packers, Panthers, Ravens, Chiefs, and Steelers.

Whether or not, of course, these teams are successful in 2004 depends largely on coaching and injuries. The Steelers arguably are the most surprising addition to this list, given an offensive line that played poorly in 2003 and unsettled backfields on both sides of the ball. Still, they've got a solid group of linebackers, a respectable defensive line, and one of the best trios of receivers in the league -- if, of course, two of them show up this year.

We also asked for a list of the most improved teams. Here's what we were told, again in no specific order: Jaguars, Raiders (because of talent infusion), and Cardinals (because of new coach).

The two worst teams by way of talent? The Browns and (you guessed it) the Chargers.

i have a strong feeling the chargers are going to be bad for a long time. as much as it pains me to see my boy Drew Breese ( same college as me ) suck like he's doing... and LT is going to go down in much the same way Barry Sanders did.... one of the all time greats... never got even close to a championship.

Well, you also don't seem to agree with the NFL types who think that Brett Favre is pretty good.

Ravens are not very talented at WR and QB. Steelers lack some talent at QB and RB. Packers have serious problems and DL and CB (and a QB who gives away games). Chiefs have serious problems at CB and DL.

Panthers do have a lot of talent spread around the team. They did lose a couple players like one of their OTs for eg. NE has a lot of talent it's not a fluke they won a SB.

I have seen Favre give away games a lot. He is pretty good he is NOT great that is my point. Even that great OAK game that he had when his dad died he put the ball up for grabs.

I don't have the time right now to breakdown the talent of every team in the NFL. But just off the top of my head CAR NE are top 5. BAL PIT GB KC I have my doubts about.

I mean no team has more talent on offense then the Vikings. And on defense they have 2 ten sack type men in Johnstone and K Williams. Solid players in Hovan and Claiborne. Added a top CB in Winefield. Solid young CB in B Williams. And have 2 Ss who had the most ints in the NFL last year. That is better then what KC has imo.

Boiler Up!

What year did you graduate? I actually went the same years as Brees ('97 - '01). I still think he'll be a solid NFL QB on a different team. I don't think anyone could have been a good QB on that team last year.

lots of what happened to Breese over the course of the past few years is a direct result of poor coaching. an example being in the big 10 throwing the ball away in certain situations resulted in a penalty, whereas in the NFL, toss it far and long and don't take the sack.

I graduated in '99 ('95 - '99 for you kids that didn't know college is only supposed to be 4 years). saw Alstott AND Breese. ah the glory!
