Channing Tatum to Play Gambit in X-Men Spinoff

Channing Tatum has signed on to star in an X-Men spinoff centered on the character Gambit, THR has confirmed.

News that the 22 Jump Street star would tackle the role last played by Taylor Kitsch broke when X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner revealed the move to Total Film on the red carpet in London Monday night, where the current X-Men movie, Days of Future Past, was premiering.

Multiple sources say that Tatum will get a stand-alone spinoff, with his version of Gambit being introduced in X-Men: Apocalypse. The stand-alone film is still in development, however, and no director has been attached.

Happy to see them making more films, but disappointed that a character already established on screen is being re-cast.

Taylor Kitsch was a fine Gambit and is a strong enough actor to continue in the role. Bleh.

Meh. He was just fine in those movies; the movies themselves just sucked. Now I'm not saying he's great or anything, but he couldn't have done anything to save those bombs.

I'm disappointed that they are making a movie called Gambit and it's not a remake of the Shirley Maclaine flick from the mid-60's. I know this is an unpopular sentiment on this forum but I'll be thrilled when Hollywood's love affair with Comic Books finally ends.

There’s a major shakeup today on 20th Century Fox’s side of the Marvel Universe as The Wrap is reporting that Channing Tatum has exited the upcoming X-Men spinoff, Gambit. The film was planned to go before cameras in October, although Tatum’s exit now leaves the film’s future uncertain.

It was recently announced that Gambit would be directed by Rise of the Planet of the Apes helmer Rupert Wyatt with casting reports coming in as recently as yesterday. Today’s update claims Tatum had been involved with screentests for the fim’s female lead with Blue is the Warmest Color and SPECTRE‘s Lea Seydoux among the actresses reading for the part.

Channing Tatum has closed a deal to star in “Gambit” for 20th Century Fox, a source close to project confirmed.

News of Tatum’s official involvement in the “X-Men” spinoff lays to rest the rumors that the project was falling apart.

Tatum has been tied to the superhero pic for some time as producer and star. He even appeared at Fox’s Comic-Con panel with the cast of “X-Men.” Details on the extent of Tatum’s involvement in future “X-Men” projects are still under wraps.

“Gambit” is slated for an October 2016 release.
