Opening day for the 2025 Major League Baseball season was held Thursday. Former Tennessee pitcher Garrett Crochet started in his debut with the Red Sox. Boston (1-0) defeated the Rangers (0-1), 5-2, at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Crochet pitched five innings and recorded four strikeouts, while allowing five hits, two earned runs and two walks. The former Vol totaled 88 pitches, including 61 strikes.

Crochet was traded from the White Sox to Boston during the offseason. He played for Chicago from 2020-24 and appeared in 105 games, including 33 starts. Crochet (9-19) recorded 296 strikeouts for the White Sox.

He was selected by the White Sox in the 2020 Major League Baseball draft (No. 11 overall).

Crochet (10-9) played for the Vols from 2018-20, appearing in 36 games. He recorded 149 strikeouts during his career at Tennessee.

The former Vol went to Tennessee from Ocean Springs High School in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

Crochet was also selected by Milwaukee in the 34th round of the 2017 MLB draft. He signed with the Vols over Texas and Tulane.
