BLOOMINGTON — Indiana basketball coach Darian DeVries spent countless hours on the phone over the last week laying the foundation for what his staff and roster will look for the 2025-26 season.

In a sit down interview Wednesday, DeVries confirmed that his staff will be similar in size to the one he had at West Virginia last year that included a five assistants including an associate head coach and multiple staffers. He anticipates everything will "come together pretty quickly," but IU will likely hold off on any official announcements until the staff is completed.

"The pieces are aligned, it's just a matter of time to get things done and finalize everything," DeVries said.

DeVries, who has full discretion to build his staff out, plans on hiring a dedicated general manager as well. He employed a director of operations, video coordinator and a director of player personnel/recruiting last season.

The general manager position won't be part of that initial staff announcement as DeVries works to figure out exactly what specific responsibilities that person would have.

While GMs in professional sports dictate roster decisions, scouting and personnel efforts and sometimes have direct authority over the coaches themselves, the position will do some of the same things when it comes to dealing with agents and recruiting, but they are working for the head coach.

"We are looking into that like everybody in college sports," DeVries said. "Everybody is trying to figure out how to best utilize that position. It's becoming more and more common, but what does that job description really look like? What's there role for us? And how do we want to best utilize that position."

Indiana already has a infrastructure in place at the department level to help coaches work through NIL deals and contracts. Athletic Director Scott Dolson and his team took a proactive approach to having a system in place to handle the looming revenue-sharing model.

"We got the right set up," Dolson said. "The set up we have in our department, we have the mechanics of creating contracts and balancing those contracts with NIL deals. The set up is good as anybody."
