LAKELAND — The George Jenkins girls track and field team boasts one of the top athletes in the nation in Chelsi Williams, of course, but the Eagles’ goals this season go beyond how many gold medals Williams can win.

Jenkins coach Curtis Williams has built a deep team around his daughter, and the Eagles harbor goals of being in contention for a at least a top five finish, and he couldn’t be happier with how his is performing with one more meet before the county meet then the three postseason meets.

After dominating the Lakeland City Meet on Tuesday, Jenkins will have 13 athletes competing this weekend at the prestigous FSU Relays this weekend.

The strength of the Eagles starts with their hurdlers. In the 100-meter hurdles at the City Meet, Jenkins swept the first four spots. Chelsi ran 13.54 to win, and the Eagles have two more runners on the verge of cracking the top 10 in the Class 4A rankings for the event. Senior Synia Sybliss ran 14.93, and she is ranked No. 11 in 4A, and Tori Gibson was third in 15.04 to move into a tie for 13th in 4A. Sainabou Touray was fourth (15.72).

Gibson, a sophomore, is fast becoming the heir apparent to Chelsi as the county’s top girls hurdler. With Chelsi sitting out the 400 hurdlers, Gibson won in 1:08.11

“Her best time in the 400 is 1:05, and when Chelsi first started running the 400 (hurdles), she was going 1:05,” Curtis said. “She (Gibson) is just getting stronger and stronger.”

With Chelsi again leading the way by winning the triple jump (39-08.75) and the long jump (19-11.75), Curtis Williams was happy with how his other jumpers performed on Tuesday. The Eagles went 1-2-3 in the triple jump with Mia Curry and Karley Paul finishing behind Chelsi. Paul also took second behind Chelsi in the long jump.

At the big postseason meets, the Eagles will be looking for points in the javelin from Taylor Gibson. She is ranked No. 6 in 4A and won on Tuesday with a throw of 98-10 and also won the shot put. Violet Smith won the discuss (89-07) and is ranked No. 10 in 4A.
