Gerald Hayes supposedly is "fine"

Posted by Mike Florio on May 29, 2010 9:28 PM ET (Profootball Talk)
In response to a report that the Cardinals are concerned about the back of linebacker Gerald Hayes, a league source who is among those who are actually working this weekend advises that Hayes is "fine."

The concern apparently arose from the fact that Hayes didn't participate this past week in Organized Team Activities. Per the source, Hayes took his grandmother on a trip with their church to Egypt. The trip had been planned months ago.

As to the cortisone shots he reportedly has received, the source says Hayes has gotten one shot, he received it a month ago, and it "worked perfect," with no problems since then.

It doesn't mean he won't have problems in the future. But we're told he's fine now.

What kind of story is that?

You are a pro football player and you plan a trip to Egypt during OTA's?

Sounds to me like it is something that the church had planned not Gerald himself. Sounded like his grandma needed an escort probably due to her age/health. Gerald obliged and obviously told the team and received their blessing. No big deal. Not like Hayes needs the OTA's he knows this defense inside and out.

I would love to believe it but I don't believe a word Mike Florio puts out. Until Sando, Somers, or Urban writes it then this story never happened.

Lets see Hayes survive the 1st 5-6 games of the season to think his back injuries isn't any big deal. I'm very concerned!!!

Bucky if Gerald got so much relief from one Cortizone shot while not even playing or participating in any OTA's,it means nothing! Besides the fact Cortizone makes you gain weight if given in larger doses it rarely ever can calm down the inflamation of a bulging or herniated disc that must endure weekly pressure of a SILB much less an offensive tackle who makes heavy contact on every play,as I can atest too.:(

I'm in the "SHOW ME" state on this story. We've seen it 3 years in a row now.Same story, same song, different verse.Come on Whiz sign his replacement and the decent backup we deserve on our team.Stop using duct tape and popsicle sticks to hold down such an important position on our defense.

This is one position on the team in a 3-4 you spend the Big Bucks if you have too.The Ravens and Ray Lewis is the best example of not cutting corners and yearly having a winning "D".Time to bring our defense up to the level of YOU'RE offense Whiz.:)

Problem is that the draft is over and the top free agents have been signed not much left out there unless we trade someone like Lutui.

So what about the team concept and being there while we install the basics of the team goals this season?

How do you rest sitting on planes for hours with a bad back?

It is two months before camp starts and 3 months before the real games start. Seems like plenty of time to rest to me.

Mr Duckjake you normally have the opposing opinion of someone with a positive attitude and I'm trying to be as politically correct as I can without saying you are negative:).I'd just say you normally come from a dark realistic opinion as you've suffered probably more than anyone here on this most awesome CARDINAL fan message board.

I truly respect and appreciate your opinion as you've been there and done that longer than the most. The RED badge of courage and fandom. You remember more about CARDINAL football than 100 of us together.I would never want to have any dissagreement with you about the team.

I just wonder if a running back who takes the pounding and dishes it out also as Stephen Jackson of the rams does, would have offseason back surgery to avoid the week on week off playing at half speed with a bulging disc problem. Just to try and help his team and himself. Risk is key and maybe career ending, but at least the team will know for sure if they can count on him week in and week out.

Forgive me for that last paragraph poorly worded and written.I just think Gerald Hayes is too big of a risk no matter how much rest and cortizone he gets after 3 years of hurting the team. His disc problem remains a mystery when it will sideline him again when we need him the most.We have a three year track record of how week to week this injury has affected this team.

Do we continue with this same answer? I would only Hope we say NO MORE! Whatever it takes. A trade for Lutui? Waiting on a final cut? I don't have a clue.I'm sure Whiz will find the best option. The two inside linebackers play such different and important roles for our defense.

Has it ever been confirmed whether Hayes has a bulging or herniated disk?

There is a difference

Were you upset about it when Fitz missed earlier OTA's while in India? Or is this just a Gerald Hayes thing?

Like it or not ... FAMILY FIRST! you can flame me, or whatever you call it, but his Grandmother may not be around for much longer, and it may have been a wish of hers. Your dead a long time, he would regret it if he did not spend time with her.

Hayes does not have the star quality that Fitz has. Not that I give Fitz a bye ethier. Hayes is a middle of the road type player and needs to be with the team. Have you ever taken any long flights? They are brutal on your back. Plenty of time when we don't have OTA's to take the trip.

Star power should have nothing to do with it when you are talking about the "team concept" Gerald Hayes is an 8 year NFL veteran and already knows this defense. He's not missing anything important. Especially since he was likely not physically participating anyway.

As the article states his back isn't bothering him and he is sitting for rest and as a precaution. So I don't see the sitting in a nice leather fully padded reclining 1st class seat that he was likely in being a problem.

You nailed it! In my youth (and into my 20s) I had some huge ambition and probably didn't understand the mortality of our human condition as well as I should have..... that's my way of saying work was about on par with my family. Now that I've lost family and friends, and now that I have 3 kids, FAMILY is 1 bazillion time more important than ANYTHING.

It's been a slow weekend from a news standpoint, but I did notice a note about Cardinals inside linebacker Gerald Hayes in colleague Len Pasquarelli's Insider Tip Sheet. The note said the Cardinals remain concerned about Hayes' bad back.

That makes sense. Hayes has missed practice time this offseason. He turns 30 in October and he has started 57 regular-season games over the last four seasons.

"Hayes has a herniated disk in his lower back and has undergone various treatments, including epidural injections," Bob McManamon and Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reported May 1.

Playing with a herniated disk can be problematic. The Rams' Steven Jackson underwent surgery to fix a disk problem when the injury affected nerves. I'm not sure if Hayes' back situation is that bad, but if the back isn't letting him practice four months into the offseason, the Cardinals' concern would seem justified.

"You know me," Hayes told the Republic. "I'll be all right."
