Gerald Hayes underwent back surgery this summer

Posted by Mike Florio on July 21, 2010 5:16 PM ET
In May, a report emerged that the Cardinals are concerned about the back of linebacker Gerald Hayes. A source with knowledge of the situation claimed that Hayes was fine.

If he was fine at the time, his condition thereafter deteriorated.

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports that Hayes underwent back surgery over the summer, and that he is not expected to practice when training camp opens.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt acknowledged that Hayes underwent "a procedure" and that he'll be evaluated when players take physicals before camp opens. Hayes apparently will land on the physically unable to perform list.

wtf

It really can't be this hard. I really am beginning to believe 100% that I am qualified to hold a position in the FO. Everyone and their mother (except apparently the team) knew that Hayes' could not be counted upon and yet the team does nothing to prepare for this. I really hope they know something that we don't and have full confidence in Reggie Walker to come in and be a stud or that Washington can start and Paris can move over to the SILB. To think that we went about drafting punt returners who didn't play last year and 3rd string QBs while top 10 MLBs were still on the board...

Amazing that there were some of us on the board that were very vocal that not having a replacement for Hayes was a major issue. I believe that Mitch, Doug and myself with a few others were in that camp.

No one wants to have to say I told you so but this is not good.

I honestly cannot remember 1 mock draft on this board that didn't have us taking a SILB at some point.

I think the bigger issue came after the draft when several of us complained that not addressing this was a major concern. But hell, cdfan, I'm old and forgetful.
Bottom-line is we are in big trouble.

FO--Idiots for not preparing for this!!!

Hayes--either a wuss or a washed-up hanger on. Sack up and get the surgery when you need it. Afraid of it? Then retire because you can't play with the bad back. Effing simple formula. I was faced with a similar scenario with a different injury, and I was able to make my choice without several month's worth of waffling.
