The German Football Federation (DFB) has renewed the contract of men's national team sporting director Rudi Völler by two years until 2028.

The DFB said on Sunday that its leadership agreed unanimously on the decision, after Völler had said he could see himself staying on beyond 2026.

Völler's decision follows that of national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, who has also extended his deal until 2028.

Both originally had contracts until Euro 2024 which they then first renewed until the 2026 World Cup, and now until Euro 2028.

Former striker Völler, 64, won the World Cup as a player in 1990 and as coach led the team into the final in 2002.

He took the DFB job in 2023 in the wake of the team's group stage exit at the World Cup in Qatar.

Under him and Nagelsmann, the German team is playing successful again, reaching the Euro 2024 quarter-finals and this summer's Nations League Final Four tournament.

"The national team and its entire team at the DFB have grown close to my heart. The inspiring home Euros, of course, but above all the collaboration with Julian Nagelsmann played a decisive role in this," Völler said.

"We have already made great progress. But we are not yet where we want to be. We have the highest aspirations and goals and believe that we can achieve them with this inspiring team."

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf named Völler "a very important building block in the national team's return to success" and said that he and Nagelsmann have "sparked a new euphoria around the national team.

"It was therefore clear to me: ‘Never change a winning team’. I'm delighted that this combination will continue," Neuendorf said.

Nagelsmann said that Völler was an "an enormously important reference person for all of us" and "a father figure for the whole team."
