Substitute Tim Kleindienst struck on his first touch and Leon Goretzka in his first match in 16 months as Germany fought to a 2-1 comeback victory in Italy in the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final tie on Thursday night.
Sandro Tonali opened the scoring in the ninth minute for the hosts. But Kleindienst headed a 49th-minute equalizer after coming on for the second half, and Goretzka nodded the winner at San Siro in the 76th in his first cap since November 2023.
Captain Joshua Kimmich set up both goals as Germany improved from a modest first half against the Euro 2020 champions and can clinch a first-ever place in the Nations League finals in Sunday's return leg in Dortmund.
The winner of the tie will host the Final Four mini tournament in early June. Germany have never made it that far while Italy came third the last two times 2023 and 2021.
