Not only is the injury risk too great, but he fair catches even when no one is around him. I know that JJ had a scary game earlier in the season, but once we clinch the bye, we should put him back there. If we lose HB, we cannot risk losing PP.

I think he does that on purpose the goal is to limit turnovers and he has the best hands to do it

He's sure-handed, and probably runs out of bounds on orders from BA.. but why risk having him out there? HB tore up his knee returning a punt 2 years ago, PP could easily do the same thing. Not at all worth the risk, especially when there is apparently (by design) no potential reward.

If PP is out there because of his hands and is going to fair catch almost everything then use some one else. If you are going to talk about leaving plays out on the field then this is no different. You are leaving potential plays, yardage and possible scores out on the field if you are fair catching punts with 10 yards of room in front of you. There has to be someone else on the roster with good hands that can at least return some punts for positive yardage.

I used to be in this camp but I've since changed my stance. I like having Peterson back there because of his sure hands and the fact that he almost never makes any negative plays (except when his protector decides to give him a shoulder shiver)

He is back there to first and foremost handle the kick, make one read and if he has a seam hit it, if not he just runs out of bounds. The key behind it though is that the offense is so good all we need out of the return game is to not mess anything up or make anything worse. I seriously think that is the philopshy. Just guarantee the offense the ball and we are good.

Also, if PR duty helps keep PP more engaged and has anything to do with how he is playing on defense then let him do it. Plus you never know, they might be in a situation down the road where they need a big return at the end of a game. There is no one on the roster that gives them a better chance for that. You don't want to all of sudden throw him back there when he hasn't been fielding kicks all game or possibly for weeks. Just something to think about.

Good post, agreed. Having someone back there that we can trust to make the right play at the right time is more important than the possibility of a big return.

Maybe P2 is our best option for PR's this year. That's a bit of a sad statement but it could be worse. SK absolutely must find a true quality PR guy for next season at the latest.
