Giants suspend WR Plaxico Burress for 1 game
By TOM CANAVAN, AP Sports Writer

AP - Sep 24, 9:40 am EDT NFL Gallery EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress was suspended for one game by the New York Giants on Wednesday for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Since the unbeaten Giants have a bye this weekend, Burress will miss the Oct. 5 game against Seattle. The suspension takes effect immediately, meaning Burress will not be allowed to return to team activities until the day after the Seahawks game.

General manager Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin informed Burress of the suspension Wednesday morning before the team held practice.

Burress was not immediately available for comment. Drew Rosenhaus, his agent, did not immediately return a telephone call by The Associated Press for comment.

The Giants did not specify why Burress was suspended. FoxSports.com said that Burress did not show up for work Monday and did not telephone or answer phone messages to explain his absence.

Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said the team was not confirming or denying any reason for the suspension.

Wide receiver is one of the Giants’ deepest positions. In addition to Burress, there’s Amani Toomer, Steve Smith, Sinorice Moss, Domenik Hixon and Mario Manningham.

Burress caught the game-winning 13-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the Giants’ 17-14 win over the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Burress was off to a great start this season with a team-high 18 catches for 259 yards and a touchdown.

The Giants signed Burress to a two-year contract extension that will bump his salary into the $7-million range over the next five years. The deal, which included $11 million in guaranteed money that will be paid this season, was signed just hours before the Giants kicked off the season on Sept. 4 against the Washington Redskins.

Burress then caught 10 catches for 133 yards in a 16-7 win.

Burress was upset that the Giants had refused to negotiate his contract after the Super Bowl, and refused to practice during a mandatory minicamp in June. He was fined about $25,000.

Despite playing on a sprained right ankle all last season, Burress had a team-high 70 receptions for 1,025 yards and a career-high 12 touchdowns. He added 18 catches for 221 yards in the postseason.

Burress caught 209 passes for 3,227 yards and 29 touchdowns in his first three seasons with the Giants, with all the touchdowns being thrown by Eli Manning.

He missed a Monday film session and is actually suspended for two weeks, which is one game because of the bye week.

I still love it. :)

It can very well hurt us and I that is bad. Whether you like them for showing who is the boss...A top tier reciever playing against our rival is always a bonus. We can't afford Seattle winning any more games than they have too.

Report: Giants WR Burress involved in domestic disputes
Sep 25, 1:12 pm EDT

HACKENSACK, NEW JERSEY (TICKER) —Plaxico Burress’ week continued to take a negative turn.

One day after he was suspended by the New York Giants due to insubordination, The Record of Bergen County reported on Thursday that police responded to two domestic disturbance calls at the home of the star wide receiver in the past four months.

Totowa Police Chief Robert Coyle confirmed the incidents to the newspaper, which reported that it could not be determined if those domestic issues played a part in Burress being suspended from the team through Week Five.

Burress, who has 18 catches for 259 yards and a touchdown this season, will miss only the Giants’ home game on October 5 against the Seattle Seahawks. The reigning Super Bowl champs have a bye this upcoming weekend.

According to The Record, temporary restraining orders were obtained in both instances after Burress’ wife, Tiffany, had phoned the police. The restraining orders were later dismissed in state court.

Police records show that Tiffany Burress called police on June 2, following what she claimed was an argument with her husband. Tiffany Burress told police her husband had grabbed her. He told police that his wife slapped him, according to the report.

On August 19, police were called to the house again. Tiffany Burress claimed she had left her husband at a New York nightclub following an argument between the pair.

According to a police report, she said her husband came home and started to play loud music, prompting her to call police, citing the couple’s small child.

Tiffany Burress also obtained a restraining order in that case, which also was dismissed in state court.

Attempts to reach Burress’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, were unsuccessful.

On Thursday, Coughlin refused to address the suspension of his No. 1 wide receiver.

“I have no comments on that at all,” Coughlin said. “I said all I was going to say about it. Thank you very much.”

Giants general manager Jerry Reese and Coughlin announced the suspension Wednesday morning, stating that Burress has been suspended effective immediately for violating team rules and will not be allowed to rejoin the team until October 6.

According to a report on FOXSports.com, the Giants (3-0) are disciplining Burress for failing to show up for work on Monday and not responding to several phone calls by the team to explain his unexcused absence both Monday and Tuesday.

“It is tough when you lose anybody, regardless of if it is injury, retirement, or suspension,” Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce said. “When somebody goes down, somebody will step up.”

Pierce said he had spoken to Burress and referred to his absence as an injury rather than a suspension.

“Things happen and you just move forward,” Pierce said. “Somebody is going to get injured, basically this is an injury. We have an injury right now with one of our best receivers. Somebody is happy, they are going to get more balls somewhere this week.”

When pressed that it was not in injury, Pierce remained steadfast,

“It is an injury. It is an injury; we just don’t know what kind,” he said.

Burress, who agreed to a five-year, $35 million contract extension with the Giants earlier his month, will not be paid during the suspension. According to NFL.com, Burress plans to file a grievance against the Giants.

“It is what it is,” quarterback Eli Manning said Wednesday. “Obviously the coach and the upper management had to make a decision and the players move on.

“We have to prepare for Seattle. We have guys who can play receiver, we have playmakers who have shown their ability, and guys who earned their spot in preseason and training camp because they were out there and performed well, so we will be fine.”

One of New York’s most important players, Burress led the Giants with 70 receptions for 1,025 yards and a career-high 12 touchdowns last season, despite being unable to practice virtually the entire season because of an ankle injury.

Burress capped off his memorable 2007 season by hauling in the winning touchdown pass with 35 seconds remaining that lifted the Giants to a stunning 17-14 upset of the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

In his first three seasons with the Giants, Burress has 227 receptions for 3,486 yards and 30 touchdowns.

To fill Burress’ spot on the active roster, the Giants signed wide receiver Taye Biddle from their practice squad.

Biddle, 25, has not appeared in a regular-season game since 2006, when he had three catches for 37 yards in two contests with the Carolina Panthers.
