The Jets likely got a fine QB by giving up 4 picks. Comparing the relative picks they paid far more than the Cards paid to get the QB who beat the Jets newest player. This is not to say that makes Rosen a better player. However, it points out how little actually separated the two QBs. Rosen is considerably ahead of Darnold in many respects. Rosen is a more accurate passer. He’s has much smoother throwing form. He is way ahead of Darnold when it comes to reading defense. Rosen’s a more disciplined pocket passer. One of the overlooked things about Rosen that’s critical is that he knows his limitations. He understands what he can and can’t do. He still has much to learn but he’s much further along towards being an NFL QB than any other QB in this draft. Rosen also has zero off the field issues.
It’s not that Rosen dominates every aspect. He’s not mobile. He’s had 2 concussions. He can be quite outspoken, like Kurt Warner, for example. Some have cited leadership concerns but his teammates have not supported those accusations.
On the other hand there’s more good news. The price was right. While QBs don’t historically follow the salary slots he will be far cheaper than if the Cards moved up to the second or fourth pick to take him. That also means more flexibility in signing future free agents. Plus there’s the good news that the price for moving up was low enough the Cards can still get more useful players this year.
When you factor in need, cost and likely performance there was no better move in round 1.
