Troy Glaus has a message for all the armchair general managers out there who think the Diamondbacks need to make drastic moves before Major League Baseball's trading deadline:

Chill out.

Other than some minor tweaking, which Glaus notes that any team could use, Arizona's starting third baseman contends that the Diamondbacks have enough talent to challenge for the National League West title.

I don't see any gross moves that have to happen. I really don't," Glaus said. "I don't think we need to do anything drastic at all. The bottom line is, we just need to play a little better.

"We play well, then we don't play well. We need to have a two- or three-week stretch where we're rolling and beating up on some people. . . . We prepare and do everything we can, but some days, it just doesn't work for us. We've had guys get it going, but never at the same time."

But if it hasn't happened by now, shouldn't the Diamondbacks be concerned that it won't happen?

They've almost reached the 100-game mark, and their longest winning streak was six games in April. They haven't won more than two in a row since the middle of May.

"No, we're not worried. Absolutely not," Glaus said, noting that the team trailed first-place San Diego by only five games entering Wednesday's tilt against Florida. "We're five out, not 20 out, and we've got 60-something games to go.

"When is it time to worry? When we're five down and there's only four (games) to go."

Stay the course

When one of your best hitters is struggling the way No. 3 man Luis Gonzalez has been, managers will sometimes drop the player down in the batting order for a spell.

Manager Bob Melvin doesn't think dropping Gonzalez down a couple spots - flip-flopping him with fellow left-handed hitter Shawn Green, for instance - is something worth considering.

"I like him where he's at," Melvin said. "We're willing to do anything, but Gonzo's been in the 3 hole for quite some time now, and guys are going to go through struggles at times. But I'm not giving up. He's our horse."

Gonzalez entered Wednesday's game hitting .130 in July (7 for 54).

Short hops

Relievers Brandon Lyon and Oscar Villarreal played long toss on Wednesday and are on the verge of starting minor-league rehabilitation assignments.

• The Diamondbacks scored 35 runs in their previous eight games, and 22 of them came with two outs, including 11 of their past 17.

• Florida's Carlos Delgado has been hit by a pitch 15 times this season, tying him with Gary Sheffield (1997) for the club's single-season record.if(ScriptsLoaded) stInit();

I'm thinking Troy was talking about his former team and not the D-Backs.

Time to face reality Troy: Your present team's starting pitching is merely average and getting worse seemingly by the day. The bullpen, which has been a joke all year, is showing signs of just being bad. Bad may be an improvement but it still sucks. Your offense is old and slowing down. You're probably weaker up the middle than any team in the NL West. Time to put down the kool-aid and start thinking about 2006.
