Gmail question

OK maybe I'm dumb and this is well known but does Gmail have some targeted advertising thing that reads your email and lists ads relevant to the subject matter?

We're trying to set up a family dinner but one of my sisters and myself have been sick with sinus issues so we pushed it back. I was reading the latest email when I noticed that all the ads on the right of the page were about sinus relief? Can't be a coincidence?

Kind of big brother don't you think?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure thats exactly what they do.

But I guess if its going to be adds, they might as well be relevent.

I have noticed that as well.

It is not like somebody is reading your messages. It is an automated process to do a search based on the words found in the message.


In general though e-mail is not secure.
If you don't want your messages read get a certificate and encrypt your messages.


I don't consider it BIG BROTHER. To me Big brother is something you cannot escape from like a mandated governmental activity.

You can always not use Gmail.

I just tried this and there were no adds.

yep I did it too, emailed from my work email to my gmail email and back about how I hated them reading my mail. No ads.

FYI there's a link to click on that explains how they do it and it says no human reads your email, it's automatic. As long as it's not Hal I guess I can live with that. "Russ we're not seeing any emails from you lately is everything ok?"
