MANSFIELD — After 45 games, the News Journal All-Star Classic has compiled quite the interesting record book.

As we prepare for the 46th edition at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night at Lexington High School, let's take a look back at some of the most prestigious and a few unbreakable records in the Classic's magnificent history.

NORTH TEAM: Introducing the 46th News Journal All-Star Classic North All-Stars

SOUTH TEAM: Introducing the 46th News Journal All-Star Classic South All-Stars

24-21: The North's advantage in the 45-game series over the South. Now, this doesn't seem significant now that the NJ Classic teams are determined by a draft that started in 2005, but it seems to be an advantage to be on the North team. Before 2005, the North had won 12 of the previous 13 games prompting the implementation of the NJ Classic Draft. That was when the teams were divided by the State Route 30 with all the teams North of the major highway that splits Mansfield were on a team and all the teams South of it were on a team. From 1979-1991, the South won nine games.

13: Number of All-Star Classic Most Valuable Players that came from Mansfield Senior. The Tygers have by far the most MVPs in the Classic's 46-year history. The first Tyger MVP was Darron Minard in 1988 followed by Mark Lee in 1992, Sean Tucker in 1995, Durbrey Black in 1997, Marquis Sykes in 1999, Herman Davis in 2000, Lance Hood in 2001, Terrence Davison in 2002, Antonio Graves in 2003, Rashad Reed in 2006, Antwoine Smith in 2007, Quan Hilory in 2019 and Maurice Ware in 2022.

43: Number of points scored by Mansfield Senior's Quan Hilory in one of the most memorable NJ Classics in history during the 2019 game. Hilory broke the Classic's scoring record in that game while also nailing 11 three-pointers, also a new Classic record. He passed St. Peter's Marcus Butler (2004) and Mansfield Senior's Antwoine Smith (2007), both of whom had previously shared the record with 39 points. Hilory scored 33 points in the second half alone which is a record. He and teammate Garrett Denbow of Ashland (who scored 36 points) are a record-holding duo for most points by two players on the same team with 79. Butler still owns the record for most made field goals (19) and field goal attempts (35).

19: Number of rebounds pulled down by Mansfield Senior's Jonathon Avery in the 2005 All-Star Classic. Avery's glass-cleaning performance set a new NJ Classic record for most rebounds in a game topping Madison's Justin Larrick's 18 in 1998. Since the game's inaugural game in 1979, there have been 71 player who posted 10 or more rebounds in a single NJ All-Star Classic.

10: Number of assists handed out by Lexington's Joey Zahn in the 2016 NJ Classic. In a game that doesn't feature much in terms of passing, Zahn remains the only player in the 46-year history of the Classic to post double-digit assists. In last year's game, the South handed out 17 assists and the North had 12 as a team.

9: Number of steals recorded by Mansfield Senior's George Palmer (1996) and Marquis Sykes (1999) during their NJ All-Star Classic games. A game that also isn't known for much in terms of defense, Palmer and Sykes put on a defensive clinic with their thefts setting a mark that is going to be hard to top.

6: Number of blocked shots recorded by Loudonville's Andy Kanzig in the 1994 NJ Classic. Kanzig earned MVP honors during the 94 Classic as he scored 19 points, and added 12 rebounds to go with his six rejections nearly posting the first and only triple-double in NJ Classic history. He owns one of the oldest individual records in NJ Classic history.

150: Number of points scored by the 1996 and 2023 North team in their matching 150-120 victories. It is the record for the most points scored in a single game in NJ Classic history and is also the record for the largest margin of victory (you can do the math). But, the 270 combined points aren't even close to the record for most points combined in a single game. That mark belongs to the 2019 game when the South beat the North 143-140 in overtime in one of the greatest NJ Classics in history. Crazy enough, neither of those teams owns the record for the most points in one half. That belongs to the 1997 North team that scored 85 in a single 20-minute half. It was just two points less than what the 1983 and 2012 North teams scored in an entire game (87) which is still a record for fewest points in a game. Fewest points in one half? That belongs to the 1986 South team and 2024 North team which both scored 35.

67: Number of made field goals by the 2023 North team. That stands as a single-game record despite there being a 3-point line in that game and not in some of the earlier versions of the Classic. The 1998 North team that shares the record for the most points in a single game attempted 138 shots which still stands as a record. In 1992, the North team made an amazing 54-of-96 shots for 56% while the 2024 North team went 35-for-104 for 33.7%, both records for highest and lowest field goal percentage in a game.

23: Number of 3-pointers made by the 2019 South team, which featured Hilory's incredible 11, an NJ Classic record. With the game trending toward the 3-point line, the 3-point records in the Classic have changed hands more than any record in the game. The 2019 and 1996 games saw 35 threes made by two teams combined and the 2023 team attempted 66 which are all Classic records. There is one 3-point record that has stood the test of time and evolution as the 1996 game saw both teams combine for 110 three-point attempts.

87: Number of rebounds collected by the 1998 North team.

30: Number of assists handed out by the 2984 South and 1994 North teams.

28: Number of turnovers committed by the 1986 and 1991 South teams.

12: Number of blocked shots by the 1988 South team.

22: Number of steals tallied by the 1996 North team.

8: Number of players in double figures scoring by the 1993 South, 2007 North and 2008 South teams.

14: Number of players in double figures scoring by both teams combined in 1998 and 2008.

95: And now for the oldest and most unbreakable records in the News Journal All-Star Classic. In 1981, the game featured 95 combined free throw attempts. The South team attempted 54 of them and made 37. Lexington's Eric Huffman will forever hold the record for most free throws made with 15 and attempted with 18. The South team made more free throws than actual field goals (35). Madison's John Bryant made 12 free throws to combine with Huffman for 30 free throws in a single game. The South won 107-104 and Huffman was the game's MVP with 33 points, the first 30-point game in the Classic's history. The 2003 South team owns the record for the highest free throw percentage at 90% (9-for-10) and the 2017 team owns the record for the lowest free throw percentage at 20% (2-of-10).
