4-star recruit recommits to UA

Highly coveted cornerback Robert Golden went to sleep Monday night thinking about going to Oregon State.

But he woke up Tuesday with the Arizona Wildcats on his mind.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound cornerback from Edison High School in Fresno, Calif., has had plenty of sleepless nights over the past month trying to come up with a final decision.

Golden thinks he will finally be able to slumber in peace, and so probably will UA coach Mike Stoops after the four-star prospect called the Wildcat coaches and gave an oral commitment Tuesday.

"I believe Arizona is where my heart is," Golden said. "If I follow my heart I can be successful."

Golden says he has always favored the Wildcats, committing to the UA before the summer and coming out for a visit during fall camp.

He wanted to look around midway through the season.

UCLA and Oregon State were among those pressing hard for a corner ranked sixth nationally by Scout.com.

Golden just took a visit to Oregon State, and several Internet sites were saying the Beavers were his No. 1 choice.

That changed Tuesday.

"I called Mike Stoops in the morning and he was pretty excited," Golden said. "He saw the Oregon State stuff and he thought I was going to Oregon State.

"After I told him I had decided to play for him he seemed relieved."

Golden is considered good enough to potentially fill in immediately for departing 2007 Jim Thorpe Award winner Antoine Cason.

That is a lot to ask.

"Antoine Cason did what he had to do and made the most of his opportunity," Golden said.

"The way he performed got him the award. I have to come in there and do what I need to do and play like Robert Golden and hopefully that will make me as successful.

"Coach Stoops seems to want me to come in and do what Antoine Cason did and that is to start right away if I do the right things. He wants me to be that type of a player."

Very interesting. Will everything hold together on letter-of-intent day? Stay tuned.

Good for UA, I was hoping ASU would be able to land this kid and have a star CB opposite of Omar Bolden, because "Bolden and Golden" rhymes, and thats just fun for everybody.

He has said he is committed and will be a Wildcat. This was posted on a premium site. He is looking forward to playing next year and is talented enough to start.

As for these kids getting stars next to their names, Cason was only a 2-star recruit and wound up a Thorpe award winner. It's nice to get a highly ranked player but it's how that player develops in college is the most important thing.

Golden & Ross are going to be the best CB duo in the country next year. Funny thing is WR Michael Turner was a highly recruited CB and would really make the DB unit even stronger.
