Shyanne Sellers did it all during an impressive four-year collegiate career for the Maryland Terrapins, becoming the first player in program history to clear 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, and 500 assists.
Now, Sellers is taking that versatility to the WNBA after being selected by the league's newest expansion team, the Golden State Valkyries with the No. 17 pick in the 2025 WNBA draft. With their first ever pick the Valkyries took Justė Jocytė, a forward from Lithuania with the fifth pick.
While the 6-foot-2 combo guard saw more time at the two-guard for head coach Brenda Frese than any other position, the Aurora, Ohio native is comfortable at either guard or wing. With her athleticism, defensive prowess and ability to create a wide range of shots for herself, Sellers should be able to adapt to just about any WNBA system.
Over the course of her senior season, Sellers — despite missing some time with a knee injury — played her way into the first-round pick discussion with some big games in critical moments. She put up 26 while going toe-to-toe with JuJu Watkins in January, and cleared the 20-point barrier eight times. Her 127 assists this season led the Terps as she finished second on the team with 14.4 points per game.
2025 WNBA MOCK DRAFT:Projected first-round picks after 2025 women's NCAA championship
Sellers was involved in everything for a Maryland team that went to the Sweet 16 this year, and her performances down the stretch showed she's ready for the pressure cooker that is the WNBA. In Maryland's final 12 games, Sellers missed just one free throw, going 46-for-47 while functioning as the team's emotional leader.
If there's one category she'll have to sharpen up, it's a tendency to telegraph passes inside, which resulted in some avoidable turnovers. That might see teams look at Sellers as a shooting guard as she adjusts to play at the next level, particularly on teams with proven experience at point guard.
