America's First Baseman swears he has no idea what he's batting, doesn't know exactly how many home runs he has hit, and couldn't tell you where he stands among the National League leaders in any offensive category.

"I don't read the paper," he says. "Well, I don't read the sports section." Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt leads the NL in RBIs. (USA Today Sports)

And those enormous video boards? The ones with all the statistics and breathless bios?

"I purposely look away," he says.

Well, we have good news for Paul Goldschmidt.

Sounds like Goldy's hero was Biggio. Ever young hitter's hero should be Biggio. Every scout I've ever known is always looking for the next Biggio. Short, compact swing in a short, compact body. Can play multiple positions, will do anything he's asked to do.

Goldy is our poster boy. Just the right disposition and self-discipline to lead our organization.

But nobody is immune from putting too much pressure on himself or, perhaps, having it put on him.

-- He is leading the league in RBI's and, understandably, not taking bases on balls when they pitch him off the plate.

-- Ever since Eric Chavez went down with the injury (after having done such a wonderful job at cleanup), Goldy has no protection at the plate. Even when he returns, Eric can't play regularly because of his age.

I think it would be worth taking walks when they give them to him until they adjust. Especially with Miggy starting to hit. The results won't be any worse than they are right now.

And I think he should forget the talk about Triple Crown numbers, forget home runs and concentrate on using his compact swing to all fields to produce hits and RBI's.

Quite frankly, I am surprised that his slump has lasted this long. Especially with a Hitting coach and Assistant Hitting coach on the job.

This monster slump is not helping his ASG cause.
