Star left fielder Luis Gonzalez left the team shortly before Saturday's game against the visiting Detroit Tigers upon learning of the death of his stepfather in Tampa and was placed on the bereavement list.
He will miss anywhere from three to seven days, which is permitted in baseball's basic agreement.
Gonzalez, slated to hit in his customary third spot in manager Bob Melvin's starting lineup, left the clubhouse less than two hours before the game and quickly was en route to Tampa.
The Diamondbacks could not immediately provide any further details.
With Gonzalez unavailable, however, the club recalled infielder Matt Kata from Triple-A Tucson. Kata was scheduled to arrive at Bank One Ballpark during Saturday's game.
Melvin also had to readjust his lineup card, moving Shawn Green from the No. 5 spot into Gonzalez's spot at No. 3. Chad Tracy moved from sixth to No. 5, Jose Cruz Jr., from seventh to No. 6 and Quinton McCracken started in left for Gonzalez and hit seventh.
