Luis Gonzalez had to finish the first half-marathon of his life Sunday — whether he wanted to or not. Gonzalez, the Diamondbacks’ star left fielder, entered the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona half-marathon despite not being a big long-distance runner.
"I never ran more than five miles before today," said an obviously tired but proud Gonzalez shortly after crossing the finish line. "It got tough and twice I wanted to pull out. But when I started to walk, people started yelling at me to run. I guess they knew who I was. I didn’t have a choice. I had to keep going."
What was the first thing Gonzalez wanted after the race?
"A chair to sit down," he said.
Gonzalez completed the half-marathon in two hours, 16 minutes, 19 seconds.
Another crossover athlete, former San Francisco 49ers running back Roger Craig, finished the marathon in a personal best 3:50.45.
SCHILLING SHINES
It turns out Curt isn’t the only athlete in the Schilling family.
Shonda, the former DBacks pitcher’s wife, ran in her first marathon. Running for her charity, SHADE , which is dedicated to fighting skin cancer, Schilling finished in 4:50.57. Curt, wearing a walking-cast boot for his recently surgically repaired ankle, was at the finish line to greet her.
