Since the combine is going on now I guess it's time for me to put my mock draft up. I'm curious of what you guys/girls think of it.
1st Round OLB/DE Larry English, Northern Illinois. I know I recently read that he came in at the combine at 275lbs. But that could bold well in our favor since we will still be running a 3-4 Hybrid and he would be able put his hand down as a DE in some situations (Think the way Shawn Merrimen was used a few years ago.) http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/de/Larry-English.php
Other Possibilities: TE Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma St. He is one of the most complete TE's in the draft. He can block very well which is a skill our TE's have been lacking for the past 2 seasons. Also would be a good target in the Red Zone. http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/te/Brandon-Pettigrew.php
OLB Clint Sintim, Virginia. A pass rusher with experience playing OLB in the 3-4 which is always a good thing should he be put in a situation where he sees a lot of playing time. Also could be a safer pick than Larry English because of the level of competition he played against. (A poor man’s Aaron Curry) http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/olb/Clint-Sintim.php
HB LeSean McCoy, Pittsburgh. A speed back that was very productive in the short time he was in college. Played well against good but not great competition. The only knock on him is the fumbling issue, pass protection and seems to try to break runs outside too much when it is a called inside run. http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/rb/LeSean-McCoy.php
OT Jamon Mederith, South Carolina. The third best OT in the draft behind Jason Smith and Andre Smith IMO. Could be future LT after Gandy is gone. Would add much needed depth at the tackle position. http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/ot/Jamon-Meredith.php
Steals (Mind you I don’t think these players will fall this far but if they do and we pick them… woohoo!)
HB Knowshon Moreno, Georgia. The top HB in the draft. Played very well against top competition behind a inexperienced OL as a freshmen. A solid 3 down back and would be a nice compliment to Hightower. http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/rb/Knowshon-Moreno.php
OLB/DE Brian Orakapo, Texas. One of my favorite prospects in the draft. I think he is athletic enough to be able to stand up and play OLB in the 3-4. He is a weight room rat. The only problems I have with him is he doesn’t have a lot of moves and he doesn’t always play up to his tremendous strength. Would add some youth too our somewhat long in the tooth OLB core. http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/de/Brian-Orakpo.php[/font]
2nd Round OC Eric Wood, Louisville. With Alex Mack most likely being gone Wood is a nice fall back option. He was a four year starter for his team so the experience is there. A blue collar player and smart on and off the field. Also might end up as a possible successor to Lyle Send. http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/c/Eric-Wood.php
Other Possibilities: RB James Davis, Clemson. http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/rb/James-Davis.php
RB Donald Brown, UConn.
http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/rb/Donald-Brown.php
Steals: Safety Patrick Chung, Oregon. Boy I wish he would fall to us. He was very productive in college and would add depth at both safety spots. He basically would take Fransicos spot and would make him expandable. http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/s/Patrick-Chung.php
3rd Round DE/DT Jarron Gilbert San Jose St. Mr. Youtube. Has very good quickness for a guy his size and a variety of pass rushing moves. He could be put in as a DT on passing downs and would be a good fit for our type of defense. http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/dt/Jarron-Gilbert.php
Other Possibilities : WR Rameses Barden, Cal Poly. My reasoning for putting him on there is if we do end up trading Boldin on draft day. As for why I like him he has big measurables being 6’6 227lbs. He broke Jerry Rice’s consecutive games with a TD that’s how good he is. I know some people think Doucet would be a good replacement for Q but it’s always good to have competition. Also Breaston wouldn’t be a good 2nd receiver he is strictly a 3rd WR (I know this from watching him at Michigan for four years, when he was in the slot that was when he was at his best.) http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/wr/Ramses-Barden.php
OG Herman Johnson, LSU. The guy is huge! He was this biggest baby born in the Louisiana. Good run blocker and can never have enough of those. Could play RT if needed. Three year starter in the SEC means a lot in terms of his ability. http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/og/Herman-Johnson.php
Now for the short answers for the later rounds…hurray!
4th Round Domonique Johnson, Jackson St. Passes eye test being 6’2 200lbs and runs a 4.40. Played at a small school against low competition. But not nearly the type of prospect as DRC as the scouting report says. http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/cb/Domonique-Johnson.php
5th Round ILB Stanley Arnoux, Wake Forest. I got nothing. Other than he has solid numbers in a good defense with Aaron Curry. http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/ilb/Stanley-Arnoux.php
6th Round OG Louis Vasquez, Texas Tech. Again I got nothing. He put up 39 reps which could mean he is a good run blocker…or pass blocker maybe? http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/og/Louis-Vasquez.php
7th Round QB Jason Boltus, Hartwick. He’s from a Division 3 school. I heard about him from ESPN First Take. Put up video game like numbers in his last two years. My problem with him is that he has a 54.6% completion percentage. Could be groomed as a backup I guess. http://www.draftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/qb/Jason-Boltus.php
