I really hope Matt can step it up when Warner is no longer our starter, for whatever reason that may be. It's good to hear he's taking things a lot more seriously now.
And to add onto what was already said, everything is relative.
You can't look past the fact that Leinart has the tallest mountain to climb out of anyone of the young QB's on that list.
Cutler was given the starting job in Denver, and is now given the job in Chicago. He didn't have to beat anyone out for the position he is in.
Young was given the job, or if I remember had to beat out a bunch of nobodies to get his starting gig with the Titans. A job he went on to lose to Kerry Collins. Collins is a solid QB but would stuggle to be a starter on many team.
Leinart has lost his job to a All-pro, and has been kept at bay by the same All-pro. If the Cardinals were a little more consistant last year, you are talking about Warner being the MVP of the league last year. So, not only do you have Leinart being held off by an MVP, in Leinart's world that is his goal. His goal is to beat our Warner for the starting job, and that would mean he would have to play beyond an NFL MVP level. That is setting the bar pretty high.
Leinart could have easily said, "screw this" taken his money, and his playboy lifestyle, and quit. Why not hold a clip board, get paid millions, and hang out with hot chicks all day ? Seriously, why wouldn't you at his age. Instead he has had to go back to the drawing board twice. Once to try and beat out Warner once Whiz came to town, and again after "working harder then he [Leinart] ever has" after his injury and still losing out to Warner.
Regardless this is all talk. When Warner steps down, and Leinart has his chance he still has to perform. But I would say it would be safe to say we will see Leinart at 100% of his potential. What that means only time will tell.
Good article tho.
