CKW and the Cards FO did a good job with the selection of Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU with the #5 pick in this year's draft. Peterson is maybe the best athlete in the entire draft, and his closing speed coupled with his ability to change directions makes him a threat to disrupt almost any out-pattern where he is within 15 yards of the receiver when the ball is thrown.
He has exceptional hand-eye coordination, and great hands. His return abilities, make him a game changer on potentially any pass he gets his hands on, or return that he doesn't have to fair catch.
Having him on the roster should make DRC sit up and take notice of his poor efforts as of late, because unless he really begins to work at his craft now, both Peterson and Toler can replace him at the corner. If DRC does begin to work at his play, then we may truly have a formidable secondary with AW, Rhodes, and the three corners in a nickel package. Red-zone coverage should only improve from an already good package.
The additional count or two during coverage that this group should give us should free our DL to make plays in the opponent's backfield on passing plays, and if we can parlay our edge rushers and ILB's into proper form, we may come up with an exceptional defense yet. Horton should help tremendously with bringing this unit, (especially the secondary along).
The way I see it, if DRC fails to produce, he can be relegated to trade material that will assist in helping our team.
