Mar. 22—Xavier cuts its deficit to single digits for the first time in nearly 8 minutes when Dailyn Swain finished off a three-point play with 4 minutes, 4 seconds remaining in Friday's first-round NCAA tournament game at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.

Swain's three-point play cut Illinois' lead to eight. The closest the Musketeers had been since a Jerome Hunter jumper had them trailing by seven with 13:55 remaining in the second half.

Illinois had an immediate answer for Swain. A Will Riley three-pointer stopped Xavier's 7-0 run, and Kasparas Jakucionis added a steal and a score to push the lead back to 13 with 3:01 to play. The Illini were challenged, but they still closed.

"No silly turnovers, no bad shots," Illinois guard Kylan Boswell said was key to not giving up more of a rally to Xavier. "(The Musketeers are a) really mature team, so they're going to capitalize on mistakes that we make. For us, I know in that moment we need to slow things down, get the best look. If that means wasting the shot, shooting less, whatever the case may be, so be it. In our offense, we are always moving, getting into next actions. ... Yeah, in that moment definitely need to slow the ball down."
