Mar. 25—The transfer portal officially opened Monday. While no Illinois players had declared their intent to enter the portal and test college basketball version of free agency, nearly 900 players, per ESPN's Jonathan Givony, had by the end of that opening day. Roughly 2,000 players were in the portal a year ago.

Players have until April 22 to enter the transfer portal this season. That 30-day window is 15 days shorter than the transfer period in 2024, but as long as players enter the portal between now and April 22 they have no timetable on picking their next destination.

Illinois looks to be as active in the transfer portal as any program. How many transfers the Illini take, of course, is dependent on how many players they lose and how successful they are in their international recruiting efforts.

"I think we will have conversations with guys and see where it's at," Illinois coach Brad Underwood said. "It's a complicated process in today's world. ... You've got guys that you know are good enough for the NBA, and they'll have decisions to make. It's a never-ending process. We've been making calls and checking the portal on a daily basis (the entire time in Milwaukee for the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament) for the grads. But we'll hope there is a nice group back, and we can build on this and try to win a national championship."
