The senior and junior classes are so thin on numbers (Willingham's recruits transfered out in droves) and Weis' first recruiting class was so small and poor in talent (Weis was coaching in the NFL playoffs, had no staff, and made no recruiting visits) that the Irish will probably start mostly sophomores and true freshmen this year.
Notre Dame doesn't redshirt, per se, but will invite back some seniors for a fifth year, if they have eligibility, have graduated, and have enrolled full time in graduate school.
Many Irish fans are predicting a losing record, or, at best, 6W and 6L.
The new defensive coaching staff is switching to a 3-4 because Weis has been unable to recruit good 4-3 defensive linemen.
Lately, a number of good Florida players the Irish had been in the running for, for the 2008 recruiting class, seem to be drifting away to other schools. We'll see. Don't cry for us, the rest of the class is shaping up nicely.
Both the sophomore and freshman classes are very good and should improve by next year. This year, the plan is to run the ball a lot. Sorry, I don't buy it. Weis likes to throw the rock. By mid-season, gun slinging will reign again.
