Listening to Sirius XM NFL channle and they mentioned that the last activity before the NFL lockout will be the draft. Menaing that all contracts will be signed AFTER a labor agreement which WILL entail a draft salary structure.

So having a top 10 pick (which we most likely will) and drafting a QB will be much cheaper than years past!

I bet there will be at least 5 QB's taken in the first 10 picks of the draft because of this.

I don't think that'll be the case. Stands to reason that if they're drafted later in the first or second, they'll be even cheaper. Team needs are still team needs and talent is still talent. I don't think it's a QB's price tag that keeps the position from being over-drafted in the top-10.

The top 10 is filled with skill players and LT's. You don't see interior linemen drafted in the top 10 either. Talent is still talent, but some of the rules are going to be tweaked this year, and I think QB's are the ones that are going to rise to the top.

Luck
Locker
Mallett

and...?

I haven't watched enough college ball so far to have an opinion. Will the lockout encourage college QB's to come out early, like Jacory Harris at Miami?

That might be part of it. Also, the idea that you might be able to get a franchise QB for pennies on the dollar compared to what you would have the year before.

I suspect there will be changes to draft philosophy and the QB's will be the ones rising to the top, especially when we have so many teams with QB issues.

I wasn't suggesting that we draft him. Just wondering if high profile juniors will come out this year.

It could also be a bad time to draft one. Considering the prices for top 10 picks will conceivable much much lower the trade market for top 10 picks will now be on a much higher topic of conversation for teams. Meaning if we are sitting at #8 and a team behind us wants to draft a franchise QB it will now be easier for them to justify leap frogging us now that the contract will be cheaper.

It will be a new territory in 2011 and the new CBA for 2012, so it will be interesting to see how the drafting dynamic will change.

Another thing that can change besides more 1st round trading action could be more teams taking gambles in the 1st round since they wont be hampered with the contract that comes along with a 1st rounder gamble.

Christian Ponder - FSU.

Jacory Harris will not translate to NFL. At the rate he throws picks for Miami, just imagine NFL DBs feasting on his bloopers. Andy Luck would be an early out.

If we did take the route of drafting a QB I think you may have to do it in the 1st round no matter what even if it is a reach. You have Mallett, Luck, Locker, and maybe Ponder deserves to be in that grouping as well. Then after that I think you have a big drop off to Pat Devlin of Delaware and then after that things just fall off a cliff.

It'll be interesting to watch the standings as the year goes on--that's for sure. The 0-4 Lions won't be drafting a QB, nor will the 1-2 Cowboys (though I expect them to finish much higher in the standings than they are now). But the 0-4 Bills, the 1-3 Browns, the 1-3 Raiders, the 0-4 Panthers, and the 0-4 Niners...that's a number of teams who want a QB as much as us, and who might have a better draft position.

I'm usually not a Darksider, but here is a Darksider prediction:

Winning the Raider game on that miss by Janikowski will cause us to lose one of the elite QB prospects. The specters of Jake leading the winning drive against Atlanta that cost us a chance to draft Manning #1, and the last second 4th down prayer to beat Minnesota which cost us Manning #2 have already raised their ugly head with the Jano miss.

They all seemed like wins at the time.

I would get J Russell and try him out because even he can't out suck Whiz's choices.
The problem is not the QB, we could ruin several more before we get too the root. And whiz is adaptable He can change, how far down this road will he go before He hires better personell personell than he is? aint hard to find at this point.

He needs to dump the RGC, PGC idea and get back with a time proven solid formula, and FEED THE BEAN already, quit making excuses and give him 30 carries and se how it works out for us!

this.

as much as i anticipate us sucking this year, there are a lot of qb-strapped teams that will likely suck more than us. particularly with our schedule. this is the one year i WANT us to lose to the niners twice.

Definitely could be. Call me an optimist, though, but the top pick or even a top 3 pick often takes a minimum of 13 losses. Even if we'd lost the Raiders game, it's still hard for me to imagine us winning only 2 more games the rest of the year*

*check in with me after the home Seahawks game: I may have revised my opinion...

Let's say there are 5 teams that are going to need to do something about their QB position next year (Cards, Bills, Raiders, Browns and 9ers). Not all of them are going to take a QB in the first. At least 2 of them will look at FA possibilities like McNabb, Vick (or trade for Kolb?) or Gradkowski. Others may look at other positions in the first--it's not like these teams are only in need of a QB--and take a signal caller later in the draft.

I don't think there's really anything for the Cards to worry about: we should have a VERY good chance to select a top-3 QB next year.
